Book Review: Sisterchicks on the Loose!

Well, the summer reading season has begun and I’ve finished my first book!  I thought it might be fun to share what I’m reading this summer and provide a little review of each book – maybe it’ll spark some discussion and idea-swapping about great reads.

I’m a little bit leery of Christian fiction simply because so much of it is formulaic.  It’s predictable.  It’s often laced with cliche’ or God-speak.  It’s out of touch with reality.  And, unfortunately, much of it is poorly written.  It’s just too hard to “enjoy” a book when the writing is something out of an elementary-school reader.

But this one looked interesting and I was willing to give it a try.  Boy, am I glad I did.  This book was a perfect read to begin the summer: light, easy reading with a good storyline, believable characters, and a good dose of humor.  So many times I found myself laughing – out loud – at mishaps and antics I could totally relate to.

The story is one of two lifelong friends, Sharon and Penny.  The two met as young mothers serving together in the church nursery.  They hatched a half-baked idea to take a trip together when their children were older and are finally making good on that promise.  The locale of this grand girls’ trip?  Finland.  In February.  From lost luggage to chocolate to saunas to tender moments between friends and family, this book definitely kept my attention.  And while the message of salvation is clear and undeniable, the overtones are neither preachy nor condemning.  These women are real, facing real challenges, real stresses, real pressures, and living real lives.  Their husbands are not portrayed as saints, but rather as real men with moments of success and failure.  Their children are not perfect, but rather behave like real children, real teenagers.

Apparently there is a whole series of Sisterchicks books in print now, but our church library only had this one.  I may have to see if I can find more at our public library and check out the other adventures of these two unlikely friends!
