Spring Break, Day 1

This week is spring break for us.  We won’t be going out of town or doing any of the fabulous vacations so many in this area seem to do – but I always enjoy the time just to reconnect with friends and hang out with my kids.  The past few days it seems my house has become the hangout for all the neighborhood kiddos – which is totally cool with me, since I’ve always dreamed of being the “kool-aid mom.”  Unfortunately, I don’t have any kool-aid made, nor do I have that really awesome kool-aid pitcher…and ain’t no way I’m letting a big, red, pitcher-shaped dude break a hole in my wall…but that’s really beside the point.

So this week, all I’ve planned to do is get together with various people we don’t get to see very often, and hopefully throw in an outing or two here and there.  Today we took advantage of dry weather and hit the park with my mom.We decided to go to Celebration Park in Allen.  Most well-known for their awesome sprayground, it also hosts one of the largest play structures I’ve ever seen in one location.  My kids love it and call it “rainbow park” because each section is a different color.  We brought scooters, bikes, kites, cameras and of course a picnic lunch.  It turned out to be VERY windy, which was great for the kite-flying, but not so great for the hair.  We enjoyed a delicious lunch by the pond, even if we had to hold our plates down with one hand and eat with the other.  The sun played peek-a-boo with the clouds all day, which kept it from feeling too warm.

Once the kids tired of that, we headed home, said good-bye to Grandma, and arranged a movie date with the Worleys.  Their family wanted to see “Horton Hears a Who” and I knew Joel was dying for some “Trey-time” so I thought this might be a great way to get together for a little while.  Though I’m a purist, I knew better than to think this movie would stay true to the book.  I must admit, I really enjoyed it.  There were some great lines, touching moments, and of course the overall message of acceptance despite our differences.

Well, that about wraps up Spring Break 2008, Day 1.  Tomorrow looks like another fun-filled day with friends – providing we all survive the severe weather threat for tonight!
