Threads of Gratitude: Old Glory Edition

It’s hard to believe that Memorial Day is only a few days away.

You know, the day that officially ushers in the summer season.  The day that reverses the social taboo against wearing white shoes and/or sandals.  The day that we get together for cookouts, swim parties, boating on the lake, or just tackling a home-improvement project.

But Memorial Day is far more than an extra Saturday, an extra day of rest on a lazy long weekend.  It’s a day to honor, to remember, to celebrate the ultimate sacrifice of those who believed so strongly in the ideals of freedom and democracy that they were willing to give their lives if necessary defending it.  It’s a day to recognize that the reason I can enjoy a cookout with friends, or a swim party, or boating on the lake, or tackling a home-improvement project in my own home is because of brave men and women who willingly stood up against tyranny and oppression.

For those who have sacrificed, defended, and fought to provide the religious and personal freedoms I enjoy today, I am grateful.
