In my line of work, it’s not unusual to have very interesting conversations on a regular basis. I learn new things every day and am constantly amazed at the things I am told. Here are just a couple of the more recent samplings.
* piano student, during a lesson, telling me about her valentines, which will include lollipops. In Texas, I’ve learned, those candies are called suckers.*
D: My mom and I are making valentines for my co-op. We’re going to put suckers in ’em!
Me: Oh, really? That sounds like fun.
D: Yeah. Oh, and by the way, why are they even called suckers?
Me:Â Well, I’ve always called them lollipops.
D: No, those are the really BIG ones. These are the little ones. You know, the suckers. But why are they called that? Is it because you suck them?
Me:Â I suppose so.
D: See, but if you’re the one that sucks on them, then aren’t YOU the sucker? Shouldn’t they just be called “sucks?”
***Next time you’re hankering for something sweet, may I suggest you treat yourself to a bag of sucks?***
* at the dinner table, having a conversation with Trey about bullies*
Trey: You see, Crisana, not everyone in this world is nice. There are bullies and bad guys and…
Crisana:Â And even robbers!
Trey:Â And robbers do bad things, like commit crimery.
And another one…
Crisana, to the secretaries at Trey’s school:Â I’m sleeping with Daddy tonight while Mommy is gone!
Yeah, I got some strange looks on that one…
See what I mean? You learn something new every day.
