A night out with the neighbors

Last night was National Night Out.  Our community has never done anything for National Night Out or Neighborhood Night Out…until this year.

It was a simple affair: catered BBQ from our former next-door neighbors, Charles & Becky Mentesana of C&B Bar-B-Q in Allen, a family pumpkin-decorating contest, and a visit by the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department (of which two members are Sloan Creek residents).

We had nearly 100 people RSVP and I’m sure there were close to that many people there last night.  We used the vacant lot next to the model homes as our gathering place.  The weather couldn’t have been more perfect – not too hot, but with a cool north wind that made sitting outside in the sun manageable.

The kids ran around together and played makeshift games of soccer, football, or chase while parents visited, met new neighbors, or just enjoyed being together.

Our Fire Department is top-notch in many ways, including their commitment to community service, and the firefighters took lots of time to visit with each person – whether adult or child – who came to see the trucks.

There were a number of festively-decorated pumpkins to vote on, and neighbors provided lots of drinks and yummy desserts to round out the meal.

We finished off the night with giveaways for the top two vote-getting pumpkins ($25 gift certificates to the just-opened Uncle Julio’s restaurant in the nearby Villages of Allen!) and door prizes (free meals at C&B Bar-B-Cue).  It was a great evening and just one more reminder of why we love this community so much.  There’s already talk of doing it again next year!
