So let’s review!
Kristi began with a foxtrot that was – in my opinion – fabulous. I loved the choreography, the moves, the dynamic contrast. She just seems so natural on the floor. Her samba, however, was not as solid as her other dances have been. Her costume made her look like Big Bird, too, which didn’t help. Though she’s not at the top of the leaderboard, I predict she makes it through easily to the semifinals next week.
Then we had Mario, dancing the Viennese (no, not Vietnamese, Matt) Waltz and the jive. I was impressed with his ability to pull off the grace and elegance of the waltz. The lift was the highlight of the dance and really worked to increase the emotional and visual impact. But his jive was stompy and flat, and though he’s got moves, he really needs to improve to stay on top. He will find himself in the bottom two tonight, but I think we’ll see him live to dance another day.
Gosh, I love her spunk. I love her survival story. I love her “can-do” attitude, her positive outlook, and her zest and enthusiasm. She honestly looks like she’s having a great time when she is dancing. But her dances are so careful, so safe and lacking in pizazz – that eye-popping, jaw-dropping WOW factor - that I think she’ll have a hard time convincing America that she deserves to be in the semifinals. As much as I’ve enjoyed her, I think tonight she’ll be dancing her final dance.
 Jason & Edyta, the Barbie and Ken of the competition. Such great eye candy. But last night, I felt Edyta went a little too far in her outfit for the tango. I found it so distracting that I couldn’t focus on the dance. So I have nothing to say except Edyta needs to leave a little less skin exposed. I wouldn’t consider what she wore to be very “family friendly”. Jason has been historically so strong, however, that I think he’ll do just fine tonight.
Cristian: the one-armed dancing bandit. Our hero of the night. Very impressive, despite limited mobility in his right arm. I loved the opening of the tango with the play on Michael Jackson and the one glove. I wasn’t as impressed with his samba as the judges – I felt he did a bit too much walking and standing there and let Cheryl do all the work – but I have to admire his grit and determination, as well as the effort he put in to learning the dances despite extreme pain. Welcome to the semifinals, Cristian.
