Serendipity. It’s a great thing. I try so hard to have my life planned out and have a predictable order and structure to my days – even in summertime – and once in awhile something totally spontaneous comes along. And it turns out to be an unforgettable experience.
Like today.
We had been running around all day, doing all different kinds of activities and errands. While it hadn’t been exactly fun, it had been busy and that always keeps me out of trouble. In the midst of all this, Crisana received a phone call inviting her to a play date with a preschool friend of hers. Of course we couldn’t resist, but first we had to stop off at the library. And to our surprise, the parking lot was FULL. On a Wednesday afternoon, that never happens….
…Unless they’re having a special program. Which they were. So I asked Trey if he’d be interested in coming back to the special program after we took Crisana to her friends’ house. He casually agreed that it “might†be fun, so we hurried through the checkout, grabbed a bite to eat, dropped Crisana off and dashed back to the library, just in time to get our tickets and score seats right up close to the stage.
With it being the second show, the auditorium was not crowded at all, and the show turned out to be all about yo-yo’s, led by a World-Champion yo-yo-er. She no longer competes, but serves as a judge, and she had an astounding routine of tricks that she showed off. She was funny and engaging, and Trey was absolutely drawn in to every aspect of her performance. In fact, he was so involved that he was called up on stage to participate in a game using yo-yo’s.
Trey had a blast being up on stage, and though he didn’t get to keep the yo-yo, he thought it was pretty cool being one of the ones selected.
What we learned later was that the boy standing next to him is actually one of our neighbors! They live across the pond and he’s a year older than Trey, but they still share many of the same interests: Star Wars, Legos, bionicles, and all things video game.
An onstage yo-yo star and a new friend to boot! An unexpected blessing, for sure!
