Twelve years ago, a legacy began.
It started as a simple desire to do something special for a group of unsung heroes, in the name of a man who lived a life of dedicated service to others. We had no idea that over a decade later, this tradition would be continuing, and become such an honored celebration at Dallas Theological Seminary.
Today, we added another name – another humble servant – to the list of those who have been presented with the “David L. Edwards Servant-Leader Award for Faculty Excellence in Spirit and Service”. Each year, the award is presented during the first week of chapel for the fall semester. And each year, we always enjoy a special time of celebrating with the honoree and his or her family members following the chapel service. This year was especially memorable for me because the recipient is a personal friend of mine, someone Matt and I have known since before we were married: Dorian Coover-Cox. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with some long-time friends who have been very influential in our lives.
And, as has become tradition, we took plenty of the requisite pictures to commemorate our day. The legacy lives on.
Following the chapel service, we took pictures with Dorian and Chuck and her award. I wished I’d had a camera ready to capture her expression when her name was announced! Priceless!
Following the pictures in the chapel, we head over to the Academic Dean’s office, where the plaque is hung just outside the door to dad’s old office. We have an unofficial “ceremony†where the name sticker is applied to the plaque and it’s always a great time while we take endless photos of the recipient with the plaque. We have officially run out of room on the current plaque and will have to start a new one next year. What a testimony to the enduring legacy of one life!
