Well, on the homefront, I can honestly say it wasn’t the most productive of weekends. The lawn didn’t get mowed. The laundry didn’t get finished. The house didn’t get vacuumed. The dishes didn’t get washed…heck, I didn’t even turn on the dishwasher. But, really, none of that mattered. It’s time for FOOTBALL!!
I’m going to start my discussion of our football weekend with some baseball. Makes perfect sense. The Rangers managed a 3-game sweep of division rivals Oakland, with a closer-than-it-needed-to-be win on Sunday. Thanks to rain delays, we were able to watch the end of the game, which definitely had more drama than necessary. The important thing is, we won. And, for the first time since mid-April of this miserable mess of a season, we are not alone in the cellar of the AL West. We are now tied for 3rd! Even more amazing may be the simple fact that we are now only 6 games below .500. That hasn’t happened since, oh, probably game 6 of the season. As hard as it may be to accept, the Rangers are actually playing pretty good ball right now, and have been consistently for the past 4 months. If it weren’t for the first two months of the season, we might actually be in contention. *sigh*
Now on to football!! Saturday is, of course, the holy day of football in our house since it is on Saturday that “the Beloved” play. Glory be, thanks to the scheduling gods, the A&M game was televised! It should have been a walk in the park over Fresno State. No, make that we shoulda “beat the he– outta Fresno State! A! Whoop!” (the one yell I’ve learned in 14 years of marriage to an Aggie…aren’t we proud) However, the Ags were determined to get their money’s worth out of the television coverage and decided to take 3 overtimes to finally settle the score. Despite being up 19-3, the Ags managed to give up every lead they had until the 3rd overtime. Thank goodness for 2-point conversions. And especially, thank goodness for the J-train. The Ags may be hit hard in the rankings, but a win is a win, even if it’s ugly. The Beloved live to see another weekend undefeated. Enjoy the moment, friends, for it may pass fleetingly.
On to Sunday. God’s day. The day God smiles from Heaven as He watches His team play through the little hole in the roof they cut out for Him. I must confess, last year I boycotted the Cowboys all season long over my disgust of “the player”. T.O., Mr. Prima Donna himself. With all the drama of falling asleep in team meetings, to accidental overdoses, to “25 million reasons not to kill himself” (though I understand his publicist made those comments and not him, but still!), to his birthday bash, to “I’m gonna love me some me.” Sheesh. Who needs TV when you’ve got this kind of drama? But this year, with the new coach, I just might return to the fold. T.O. behaved, made a few nice plays (though not in the first half), and the Cowboys offense kept it going just enough to get their first win. I’m not jumping on the Super Bowl bandwagon yet, but I do have a hopeful feeling about this season….IF the defense can figure out a way to keep the other team from scoring 5 touchdowns in a single game. All in all, a pretty successful weekend for the Texas sports fan. Now, if only I could be so successful with my “to-do” list.
DOUBTER!
