Welcome back to reality

Our whirlwind trip to Chucktown, SC, is over and we are once again back in Texas, safe and sound.  I don’t have time for a full recap, but I will endeavor to hit the highlights – and, as usual, pictures and details of our trip will be forthcoming.

And now, in no particular order, I will reveal the moments that will be returning to live again in family lore – and which moments will land in the bottom two:

  • playing “I Spy” on the way to the airport, and having guesses range from “the air conditioning” (in response to “I spy something black”) to “those roundy cones” (i.e., construction barrels – when guessing something orange).  I’m sure she will deny it, but both of those guesses came from the brilliant mind of Grandma.
  • seeing Dan’s house for the first time in person – complete with a brand-new upstairs addition/renovation which is absolutely beautiful!
  • sharing meals as a family – ranging from 9 to 16 of us! – around one table
  • phrases such as “meachum meachum”, “ternimal”, and “steppy-time” once again becoming common vocabulary
  • learning new and creative ways to bless the food before a meal, from “Superman” prayers to “Addams Family” to “Johnny Appleseed”
  • meeting Dan’s circle of friends and support in Summerville, as well as special friends for Taylor
  • watching with unbridled pride as my nephew marched in to the Charleston Performing Arts Center, a distinguished honor graduate, #7 in his class of over 600
  • t-shirts with F.U. on the front…for Furman University, the college of choice for the new graduate
  • family pictures on the porch
  • sharing the moment with David & Chris via the miracle of wireless communication…and hearing the good news that all is going well with Chris’ treatments
  • attending church as a family
  • Sticky Fingers Barbecue, Cypress Gardens, Patriots Point, and the South Carolina State Aquarium.

And now, the bottom two:

  • unidentified viral skin rashes
  • Wendy’s and Sea Turtle Cafe…a master class in inefficiency

I don’t think we could have asked for a better trip.  We laughed, we shed a few tears, we remembered, we honored.  But most of all, we celebrated.  And the fact that we did it together makes the time shared even sweeter.

  1. Okay – so – you gotta love SC! Furman University’s mascot is now called the Paladins (a knight), but they use to be called the Furman University Christian Knights. That changed when some smart person realized the acronym. I only know that because when we lived in Columbia we had friends from FU – kinda funny!

  2. well, that and the fact that in South Carolina…you just have to be careful of anything to do with Christian knights. *wink*

My ex-sister-in-law vowed that her son would NEVER wear clothing with F.U. on the front…the very next night she showed up for his graduation party and what was he wearing? A t-shirt with “F.U. ’til you’re purple” emblazened across the front. See, he’s not even IN college yet and already she’s lost control.
