South Beach Diet – Off the beach (sort of)

We are officially off the beach.  South Padre Beach, that is.

We had an incredible week there.  I don’t know how I will eventually blog it, but I do intend to share details soon.  Though we weren’t quite as rigid with our eating habits as we have been at home, I didn’t want to completely fall off the wagon so to speak.  We enjoyed high-protein breakfasts of scrambled eggs, turkey bacon and tomato juice (with an occasional whole-wheat english muffin) and salad lunches (whether tuna salad with whole wheat crackers or lettuce salads with avocados, tomatoes, celery, and cucumbers mixed in).  We drank our water and diet sodas and brought along “tea shots” to help make the highly chlorinated (and slightly green) tap water on the island palatable.

We ate out for dinner most nights, returning mainly to our old favorites: Blackbeard’s, Captain Roy’s (though that was for lunch), and Pirate’s Landing.  We did try one new place, Daddy’s, and found another that we will have to try next time.  Several restaurants sustained hurricane damage this season – oddly enough, more from Ike than from Dolly – and were still in the process of renovating or rebuilding when we were there.  I tried as much as possible to stay away from the fried stuff and stick with the grilled options, choosing salads and veggies for side dishes.  I did indulge in a margarita one night and some key lime pie for dessert, but tried to keep from straying too far or too often.

But between Halloween and being on the road for two straight days, the last 72 hours have been an abysmal failure, diet-wise.  The scale shows it: a gain of 3.5 lbs. from last week.  So I have my work cut out for me.  I’ve got my menus planned for this week and a renewed determination to get back on track and keep on losin’.  I have to be pleased with my progress so far, and a slight setback like this won’t be enough to keep me from reaching my goal.  Besides, I’ll have to keep pace with Matt once he starts chemo!
