Hey, Richie, you got some ‘splainin’ to do

So last night Matt and I enjoyed – for the first time in what seems like forever – an evening at home, together, both of us at the same time.  It being Thursday, our activities revolved mainly around “Lost” – but when the show was over we needed something to soothe our confused and boggled minds.

So we switched over to the Rangers-Mariners game (just to check the score, you know).  And we caught it – literally – just in time to see this (no, not the announcer, the actual play):

Having missed the first 3 1/2 innings of the game, we were unaware of the history.  To us, it looked like Richie Sexson overreacted on a pitch that was high, but nowhere near inside.  And, I gotta say this, to have a pitch to Richie Sexson be high is quite an achievement.   Then we hear that Mariners starter Felix Hernandez drilled both Ian Kinsler and Gerald Laird earlier in the game.

Lemme get this straight:

  1. The Mariners pitcher hits two -yes, two – of the Ranger batters in the game.  Probably not intentionally, but still.
  2. The Rangers pitcher throws a high pitch that doesn’t come close to hitting the Mariners hitter.
  3. So the Mariners hitter charges the mound and throws his helmet at the pitcher.

Okay…I still don’t get it.  Can someone ‘splain this to me?

The good news is that the Rangers managed to kick butt and hand the Mariners their second consecutive shutout.  The Rangers leave Seattle, still in the dregs of the AL, but no longer in last place in the AL West and closing within 4 games of .500.
